'The Christmas Violin': Trying new structure

I’m 10,000+ words into my WIP, and I’m wondering if the structure is working. I’m trying something new, constructing “The Christmas Violin” like a concerto with three movements. Movement 1 is fairly short and Movement 2 will be the longest. I can’t wait to write Movement 3, which will culminate the piece, hopefully in a satisfying way.
It’s fun to try new things. If they work, it’s great. If they don’t, then I start over and find a better way. But I think when we try new things, we grow.
Do you try new things? Or do you stick with what’s been proven?

Semen dialogue made me laugh

I just wrote this dialogue in my WIP, and it made me laugh. Nothing like two girlfriends keeping it realz.

..........

I called Sue to thank her for the flowers.
“So I think I settled on the semen."
Sue laughed. “Do you know how funny that sounds?”
“OK then, the donor. He’s tall and thin, strawberry blonde hair, like me, and smart. No. 424.”
"He's got a number?"
"Yeah. No name. Just a number."
“And the sperm's been tested and all that?” Sue asked.
“Yes. I mean he’s been tested for all kinds of crap. But I’m sure the sperm's good or they wouldn’t use it. Those little suckers have to be good swimmers.”
“But not as good as if you were having regular sex, right?” Sue asked.

Would you keep reading?

Opening to WIP

The bastard was dead.

I stared at the newspaper clipping Mom had sent me. I had read his obituary online, but seeing it on paper in front of me made it more real. Kind of like watching the Wicked Witch of the West melt in the “Wizard of Oz” – all the evil you loath becoming a puddle of nothing.

“Richard M. Smith, 61, was ushered into Heaven on Saturday, February 11, 2012, surrounded by his family at his home.”

I’m pretty sure he went to Hell.

“He was a loving husband, devoted father and dedicated coach.”

He was the biggest asshole on this side of the Mason-Dixon Line. Maybe on the whole East Coast. Oh, what the hell, let’s just say the entire country. You get the point, he was an A-S-S-H-O-L-E, and I hated him more than I’ve ever hated anyone in my life.

Mostly because he ruined it.

Excerpt from WIP

I remember his black hair and curls. His five o’clock shadow in the middle of the day. The way his smile took up most of his olive face and the way his dark eyes danced when I walked into the room. I remember the first time he told me he loved me and the first time we made love. Why is it that you never forget your first love? Maybe it’s because it’s the first person you gave your heart to, completely. The first time you were afraid to breathe for fear the moment would pass and you would miss some of the seconds. Life is seldom what we think it will be. Especially when you’re sixteen and the biggest concern you have is whether someone has the same prom dress.

WIP: The Lion Awakens

The Lion Awakens (WIP)
Logline: Two teens battle enemies from alternate universe to save their own.
Opening: “Gabe, we talked about this. There’s no other way. Annie and David need to know. We’ve watched over them for thirteen years. We’ve done everything we promised Charlotte and Tom we would do. But we need their help now.”
Gabriel looked at his dying brother lying under a heap of wool blankets in the brownstone they had lived in since coming to this universe. He knew Peter was right. They would need Annie and David’s powers, powers the teens were not yet aware they had, to stop the destruction of their world.
“Are you sure they will find the messages?” Peter asked.
Gabriel had observed Annie and David since they were toddlers. He knew everything there was to know about them. Their favorite foods and movies and TV shows and books and whether they did their homework or lied to their parents or skipped school or failed a test.
“They’ll find them,” Gabriel said, “and the lion will awaken.”
